TEST NAME RESULT UNITS REF. RANGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Carcino Embryonic Antigen (CEA) 0.9 ng/ml (< 3.00) Comments : AxSYM CEA Assay (ABBOTT LABORATORIES) CEA is a reliable Tumour Marker for already diagnosed Colo - Rectal Carcinomas. Baseline levels measured prior to therapeutic intervention, and followed later by serial periodital measurements, will predict the out come of the therapy. It must be emphasized that CEA may also be elevated in Carcinomas of Breast, Ovaries, Lungs, Prostate, Pancreas, stomach, liver and thyroid (Medullary). Non malignancy conditions showing elevated CEA levels include ulcerative Colitis, Pancreatitis, Hepatitis, Cirrhosis, Obstructive Jaundice, Bronchitis and heavy smokers. Therefore, this parameter should never be used as a screening test for diagnosis Colo - Rectal Carcinomas, but only as an aid in follow - up studies.
